ZF Offers Smart Solutions for ADAS Development - ZF

ZF Offers Smart Solutions for ADAS Development - ZF Innovation & TechnologyArtificial Intelligence Smart Solutions for ADAS Development ZF has been developing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for years and has successfully launched these innovations into the market. Now, the technology company offers the same digital tools and services it tested directly to its customers, accelerating ADAS system development and reducing costs.

Author: Jan Wienrich, 2024-07-31 Recognizing that a mailbox is not a pedestrian and that a parked car doesn't move is second nature for humans. This basic understanding is crucial for safe and comfortable navigation in traffic. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems perform similar tasks, correctly recognizing and processing objects such as other road users, lanes or traffic signs in real time. Cameras, radar, lidar or ultrasound sensors continuously provide data from which the vehicle generates a three-dimensional image of its surroundings. It is important that the vehicle processes the digital sensor data correctly so that the vehicle obtains the "ground truth." If this "ground truth" is not true, it can lead to serious consequences.

In this video, ZF expert Jan Dupuis explains ZF Annotate. Ensuring "Ground Truth" with Artificial Intelligence How can we ensure that the system processes the data correctly and that the "ground truth" actually corresponds to reality? During the development and validation process, reference data is collected to compare with the results of the systems being tested. For this purpose, ZF has developed the ZF Annotate validation service. The reference measurement is performed with an additional sensor set that collects data independently of the setup to be tested.

The reference sensor system is either used on the test vehicle itself or in a separate reference data vehicle driving behind it.

The sensor set can either be mounted on the test vehicle itself or on a separate vehicle driving behind it and is confronted with the same traffic situations. The recorded data is then uploaded to the cloud and analyzed. Thanks to artificial intelligence, all relevant objects are accurately marked, classified, attributed and assigned unique ID numbers. Moving objects are tracked. With this annotation, ZF Annotate offers a highly precise comparative measurement.

Accelerating the Validation Process with ZF Annotate Previously, the technology company used ZF Annotate to test ADAS systems that it has launched on the market. Now, the company also offers this service directly to its customers, thus helping to accelerate the testing and training of ADAS/AD systems from Level 2 up to Level 5 and make them more cost-effective. The validation of such systems used to require a lot of work and was correspondingly time-consuming and costly, since the reference data are traditionally manually annotated by people.

"Thanks to artificial intelligence, we can speed up the validation process by up to 10 times. This saves our customers time and money ." Mathias Miedreich, ZF CEO on ZF Annotate "Thanks to artificial intelligence, we can speed up the validation process by up to 10 times, thus reducing an annotation from 12 months to only two. This saves our customers time and money," explains Mathias Miedreich, Chairman of the ZF Board of Management. "With ZF Annotate, we are able to generate a ground truth in the shortest possible time," explains Klaus Hofmockel, Head of Research and Development in the Driver Assistance Systems and Electronics division at ZF. "With the ability to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our cloud-based service, completes the validation of reference data in a remarkably short time compared to the market, without any loss of quality."

ZF Annotate is a state-of-the-art, AI-supported validation solution for testing and training modern ADAS/AD systems - whether for passenger cars or trucks.

Find out more about ZF Annotate Comprehensive Visualization of Sensor Data ZF Annotate is just one of the self-developed ADAS testing solutions that the technology company offers to customers. Another is ZF Visual, an R&D software that visualizes data from ADAS and AD systems, sensors and reference systems. In this way, engineers are enabled to visually experience product performance of camera, radar, LIDAR and complete systems. The tool helps to better understand the individual sensors and their environment perception. With ZF Visual, the technology company has developed a solution that enables comprehensive sensor fusion and environment visualization of ADAS and AD systems. ZF Visual can be used both in test vehicles and to playback data for post analysis. Ultimately, it empowers users to explore and analyze data effectively, ensuring the development of safer and smarter driving solutions.

ZF expert Jens Hedrich explains the data visualization tool ZF Visual. Solutions for Both Passenger Cars and Commercial Vehicles ZF is known for developing new technologies for various application areas. ZF Annotate and ZF Visual can be used across all vehicle classes in both the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors. These tools, ultimately contribute to making road traffic safer and more comfortable for everyone.

Find out more about ZF Visual Jan Wienrich has been working as a cross-media publisher at ZF for several years. He is specialized in topics ranging from automated to autonomous driving.
